Two wavelengths, different roles

LightWalker combines Er:YAG (2940 nm) and Nd:YAG (1064 nm) laser wavelengths. These interact with dental tissues differently, allowing the dentist to select the wavelength and settings for the procedure. Er:YAG can be used for cavity preparation and hard- and soft-tissue treatment; Nd:YAG has soft-tissue applications, including periodontal procedures. Learn about the LightWalker platform from Fotona.

Dual-wavelength periodontal treatment

Periodontal care starts with an examination of your gums, pocket measurements, and an assessment of the support around your teeth. When appropriate, a dual-wavelength laser approach can be incorporated into your treatment plan.

Fotona’s TwinLight® periodontal approach uses Nd:YAG energy to treat diseased pocket lining, Er:YAG energy for cleaning root surfaces, and a further Nd:YAG step to support clot formation. Your dentist determines which steps are appropriate for your condition. Read Fotona’s explanation of TwinLight.

Scaling and root planing remains an established initial treatment for periodontitis. Evidence for added benefits from certain laser treatments remains uncertain; laser care does not replace daily plaque control, follow-up visits, or periodontal maintenance. We will discuss conventional treatment, laser options, and specialist referral when indicated. See the ADA periodontal treatment guideline.

Fillings without local anesthetic—in selected cases

Some cavities may be prepared with the LightWalker laser with little or no local anesthetic. Whether this is suitable depends on the cavity’s depth and location, the tooth’s condition, and your sensitivity. It is an option to discuss, rather than a promise of a needle-free or pain-free visit.

The laser prepares the tooth; a filling material is still needed to restore it. Your dentist may also use conventional instruments to complete the restoration. Tell us if you feel discomfort so we can pause and adjust your comfort plan, including local anesthetic when needed. You can also explore our sedation dentistry information.

Cosmetic and aesthetic applications

A balanced smile involves both teeth and gums. Depending on your oral health and anatomy, laser treatment may be considered for:

  • Gum contouring: reshaping an uneven gumline or selected areas of excess gum tissue.

  • Crown lengthening: exposing additional tooth structure when clinically appropriate for a restoration or smile plan.

  • Other aesthetic options: the LightWalker platform supports applications such as TouchWhite® laser-assisted whitening, LipLase®, and SmoothLase®. Ask which options are available for your needs; device configuration, clinical suitability, and expected results must be assessed individually.

Not every “gummy smile” has the same cause, and cosmetic results vary. Learn about Fotona’s cosmetic dental applications and explore our other dental solutions.

What to expect at your consultation

Bring your questions about comfort, recovery, alternatives, and cost. We will review your health history, examine the area, and explain the proposed procedure before treatment. Protective laser eyewear is used during laser procedures, and you will receive aftercare instructions for your specific treatment.
